The IELTS test has 4 parts:

There are 4 parts in the IELTS test: - Writing (task 1 & 2), Reading, Listening & Speaking

In both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Exam, Writing Task 2, Listening and Speaking are the same

Writing task 2 is an essay. Here you are required to answer an essay question in 40 minutes. You need to write at least 250 words. In IELTS Listening test, you are required to answer 40 questions after hearing 4 audio recordings. This section lasts between 30-40 minutes.

In the Speaking test, you will be interviewed by an examiner. This test includes 3 parts: the interview, the short presentation, and the discussion. It last between 11-14 minutes.

In IELTS Speaking exam, you will be interviewed by an IELTS examiner. This exam section comprises of 3 parts: the interview, the short presentation, and the discussion. It ends between 11-14 minutes.

The only difference between IELTS General & IELTS Academic exam is Writing Task 1 and Reading.

IELTS Academic or IELTS General: Writing Task 1

IELTS Academic

You are required to describe and analyze data in one of the following  ways:

  • Bar chart
  • Line graph
  • Pie chart
  • Table
  • Diagram

IELTS General

Write a letter in one of the following styles:

  • Formal (to someone you do not know)
  • Semi-formal (to someone you know formally)
  • Informal (to friend or family)

You are required to complete both of these writing tasks in 20 minutes and must write at least 150 words for each.

IELTS Academic or IELTS General: Reading

IELTS Academic

  • 3 long passages increasing in difficulty
  • Academic style texts (journal articles, textbook extracts)
  • Texts that pertains to academic topics such as science, history, sociology

Ielts General

  • four short passages increasing in length and difficulty
  • More general /everyday style texts
  • Texts pertaining to social survival (advertisements, notices etc.); workplace survival (job descriptions, employment contracts etc.); general texts (newspapers, magazines, travel brochures etc.)

You are required to complete both of these reading tasks in an hour (50 minutes of reading time and 10 minutes to transfer your answers onto your answer sheet). Both of these tests include total 40 questions.
