IELTS Reading Section – Three vital things to note about multiple choices

In IELTS Reading, time is your greatest challenge. You are required to respond to three passages in 60 minutes. When you are in a hurry, there is possibility to make mistakes. Try to spend around 15 minutes in reading and digesting three vital facts about multiple choice questions (mcq) in the reading test of IELTS Exam.

How to answers?

Lesson: Read the instructions for each section very carefully, even if you think you know what to do.

In IELTS reading section, you have more than 1 multiple choice tasks to perform. While reading the first passage you are required to choose two answers from each question. So, go ahead by choosing two options each time.

In the second task for multiple choice questions, you are required to choose either one or three option per question. When you choose two, you will get zero marks.

Use your knowledge of the world

Often, you may find it easy answering the question as you use your common sense. For instance, you are required to answer a very general question, like the sky:

The sky is:

  • cloudy
  • blue
  • artificial
  • green

You have seen the sky, and you know it’s not artificial, so you can eliminate that answer, and you know it’s not green, so that can’t be correct either. So we only have two answers left: hot and yellow. At this point you need to go back to the passage and find something that relates to cloudy or something that relates to blue. Your knowledge of the world is unlikely to be enough to lead you all the way to the correct answer; but it can take you half way there.

You are not penalized for the wrong answer in IELTS exam. You score only for the correct answer.
