Vital Things to Note:-

1.     The examiner does not want you to go on listing the problems and solutions. He wants you to pick one or two problems and solutions and then expands on them with explanations and examples. Beware of this point.

Analyzing the Question 

This is one of the most vital parts of answering any IELTS writing question. If you don’t take your time to properly think about what the examiner is asking you to do, then gets difficult for you to answer the question correctly.

You need to properly think in terms of what the examiner wants to ask from you:-

You must analyze this sort of questions taking into account the following terms:-

  • keywords
  • micro-keywords
  • action words

Keywords are the words that denote what the general topic is:

Micro-keywords denote which part of the general topic the examiner wants you to talk about. They often give an opinion, qualify the statement or talk about a sub-category of the bigger general topic.

Action words denotes us what the examiner wants us to do.

Global warming is one of the biggest threats humans face in the 21st Century and sea levels are continuing to rise at alarming rates. 

What problems are associated with this and what are some possible solutions. 

As mentioned above, ‘global warming’ is our general topic which is our keyword out here. But we can’t write about every problem related to global warming. So here we require to find micro-keywords.

 ‘humans‘ and ‘sea level rise‘ are the micro-keywords out here. So, in place of writing just about the huge topic of global warming, we need to talk about how particularly sea level rises will affect humans.

The action words are problems and solutions.  It’s our task out here.  In case of advantages and disadvantages essay for IELTS, advantages and disadvantages would be our action words.

How to Think of Ideas 

 

There is a need to think of specific and relevant ideas.. I will recommend you to use coffee shop method’ in place of of brainstorming or mind-mapping- which take too much time and may lead to ideas that are not relevant. You think of as you are in a coffee shop with your close friend. He has just asked you a simple question.

In this case, it may be “What are the problems and solutions associated with sea level rise on humans?” I am sure when you are explaining to your friend; you have at least 2 or 3 problems and solutions. In this way you may answer in a much more relaxed manner. It puts you out of an exam situation in a comfort zone while you are answering.
