In the first year of your living and studying in Canada, you
need to get indulge with a lot of complicated paperwork and arrangements. Here are 10 items on our
university checklist below and you’ll be set up for an awesome first year of
studies.
Ø
Funds for Living Expenses
It is vital to have your full accommodation information,
including the address, when entering Canada. The border officers will often ask
you about your accommodations and can turn you away if you don’t have a place
to live. You are required to prove your financial means in order to support
your living while studying. International students living outside of Quebec
must prove a minimum amount of $10,000 CAD for living expenses
in each year of study (in Quebec the amount is $11,000). This is in
addition to your tuition fees. GIC
is required to prove your financial means
If you qualify for Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s Student Direct Stream, you’ll be required to take out a $10,000
Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC).
Ø
Funds for Tuition
When you intend to make a payment outside of Canada, bank drafts
or money orders (in Canadian dollars) are accepted by most universities and
colleges. CIBC’s
International Student Pay program is another great way,
allowing students to pay their tuition in their home country’s currency. You
can use the service yourself, or have a parent or agent pay on your behalf.
While studying in Canada
is more affordable compared to other countries, tuition will still set you back
anywhere from $10,000 to $30,000 a year.
Ø
Clothes For Winter
When you are living live in southern British Columbia, you may get away with not wearing winter clothes, as you
won’t witness cold in this region as cold as the rest of Canada. But however
for anywhere else in Canada, you are needed sufficient preparation for winters.
You have most often heard that Canada gets really cold in the
winters. It’s quite true. A winter coat, boots, hats, and gloves are
a must in order to stay warm.
Toronto, one of Canada’s warmer cities in the winter witnesses the
average temperature in January at about -5.5°C (22 °F) and it’s not uncommon to
see the temperature drop to -20°C or more.
Ø
Bank Account in Canada
One of the first vital things that you are required while
getting settled at your new home in Canada is to open a Canadian bank account. It’s recommended to open a no-fee
chequing account. You may also want to find a bank that offers services in
your native language if you’re still learning English or French. It will
help to manage your finances and make it convenient to collect income whenever
you end up working in Canada.
Ø
Tech/Gadgets
The most vital piece of technology that you need to have is a
smartphone. You are required to use a Canadian mobile carrier during your stay
when you bring a phone from home or purchase one in Canada. When you are bringing any electronics from
home, you need to ensure they are compatible with Canadian outlets and
voltages. When not, you are required to use an adapter (or several depending on
how many electronics you have).
Ø
Emergency Contact List
As you are living away from your home and family, it’s good to
have a list of emergency contacts in both physical and digital copies so that you
can share with new friends and roommates if you have them.
Your numbers should include parents or guardians, siblings, relatives,
and anyone you know and trust who lives locally.
Ø
ID Proofs
As international students,
passport isn’t the only proof of identity you will have. It would be good to every
piece of official ID you can, such as a driver’s license and birth
certificate. Furthermore, you need to make sure that your passport is valid
for at least six (6) months past your date of arrival and ideally for
the duration of your study period.
Ø
Insurance
All international students in Canada must have health
insurance. It’s not optional. It’s
better in order to save your finances (and your life) in the event of a
medical emergency. The average annual premium would cost between $600 and
$900 CAD.
Ø
Medical Records and Prescriptions
You are required to pass a medical exam before being
allowed to enter Canada. It will be outlined by the school that which documents
you’ll need to bring, including medical, dental, and vaccination
records. So, before being insured, you need to ensure that your medical
records and prescriptions are in order.
Even when you have any prescriptions, you’ll want to make sure you
have them all while arriving in Canada. There may be a chance that won’t be
available in Canada. For that you are required to have research and look out what
your options are when you arrive in Canada.
Ø
Letter Of Acceptance (LOA)
In order to attain your study permit, you are required to
present your acceptance letter to Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC). You
are required a printed copy of your original acceptance letter. So, acceptance letter is the final
item on our university checklist you must have.
