When should I apply?

An application for a work permit can be made by your spouse/partner before or after they arrive in Canada. As usual, the work permit is issued for the same length of time as your study permit. There is no need for a job offer for your spouse/partner in order to apply for a work permit.

In some of the case, spouse/partner work permit applications are being processed by Canadian visa offices abroad at the same time as study permit applications. Here you are required to include the additional fee for the work permit and complete the work permit application for your spouse/partner.

Most spouse/partners arrive in Canada as visitors first and apply for a work permit after they are in Canada. If your spouse or partner does not need a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), they might be able to apply for a work permit at the border or airport where they enter Canada.
